3 Hair Habits To Avoid

are you guilty of any of these habits?

Today we’re running through a few hair related bad beauty habits you should think of severing ties with this summer!

Stop using hot tools without heat protectant

We know, we know… Your mornings are hectic. You don’t even want to think about adding another step to your routine. But applying heat protectant is key if you’re frequently using hot tools. Without heat protectant, you’re essentially burning your strands and sacrificing them to the hair gods if you don’t create a protective barrier between them and your curling iron!

Avoid roughly combing your wet hair

There’s nothing wrong with combing wet hair as long as you do it carefully. Wet hair is so much more fragile compared to when your hair is dry.

We suggest using a few sprays of Kevin Murphy’s Un.Tangled Moisturizing Detangler Spray to make the combing process a lot smoother. Then, start at the bottom of your hair and slowly work your way up, gently working through your knots, instead of tearing through them.

Give your strands extra love between reservations

Ensure you make time to do a hair mask on a weekly basis to keep your hair moisturized and healthy all year long! We love suggesting the LOMA Deep Conditioner.

We always recommend clarifying the hair first (we love Kevin Murphy’s Maxi.Wash) so your hair can absorb and feel the full benefits of your weekly treatments.

if you’re guilty of any of these habits, don’t worry. they’re all simple fixes that will make a world of a difference! looking to change up your look for summer? to book with one of our talented stylists, click here.

How To Conceal Rid Of Split Ends

How To Conceal AND Rid Of Split Ends

Split ends are a woman’s worst enemy! Although it can be difficult to prevent split ends, here are some of our top tips on how to reduce their frequency and severity.

What Causes Split Ends?

Split ends are a form of physical damage to your hair. When your hair strands lack essential moisture & turn dry/brittle, they split apart to form a Y-like shape that we all know too well called “split ends”. This can be from:

Using hair products that are too drying
Frequent use of heat-styling tools
Chemical hair treatments like coloring
Dry climate & constant sun exposure
Rough handling of hair while combing or shampooing
Not using a conditioner or serum post hair wash

Regular Haircuts & Trims

Cutting just 1/2” off every 3 months allows your hair to continue to grow in the healthiest way possible! Plus, freshly cut ends look thicker & more healthy than wispy ends.

The secret to long hair (yes, we’re telling you 😉), is getting haircuts 3-4x/year and asking for in-salon conditioning treatments at every cut to prevent breakage.

Use A Wide Tooth Comb To Detangle Wet Hair

Hair is weakest when it’s wet, and wet hair is more prone to tangling. To prevent shower-induced tangles, give your hair a brush before and after the shower.

Our Opulent tip: Apply a nourishing conditioner like Hydrate.Me Rinse, untangle strands with your fingers & use a wide tooth comb before rinsing.

Use A Hair Oil

Kevin Murphy Young.Again oil is an Opulent Beauty fave! It is a weightless, nutrient-rich oil that helps restore and replenish the hair. This product is ideal for dry, damaged or brittle hair.

Hair oils are great to prevent/manage split ends because it pumps moisture back into your fragile and damaged ends.

Have a question about split ends or need help with your hair? email us at hello@opulentbeautyllc.com, we’re always happy to help!

5 Signs You May Have Heat Damage

If your hairstyling tool of choice involves heat, you’re probably familiar with heat damage. The telltale signs of heat-damaged hair are pretty evident. After one too many heat styling sessions, your hair may start to show the signs of over styling.

Heat damage can make straight hair appear dry and brittle. Depending on the severity and type of damage, there are things you can do to help restore your hair’s shine and strength without cutting it short.

Here are 5 signs you may have heat damage

  1. you may have white nodules at the end of your hair shaft

  2. your hair may feel overly dry

  3. you may experience difficulty styling your hair or brushing it out

  4. your hair may tangle and knot easily

  5. you have split ends or ends that easily break off

Once your hair is damaged by heat, it can get to the point where you feel like cutting it all off is your only option. Depending on the severity and type of damage, there are things you can do to help restore your hair’s shine and strength without cutting it short. Here are our favorite tips to bring your hair back to health.

Tip #1: Hair Mask

Hair masks and deep-conditioning treatments that are rich in moisturizing ingredients can help bring your hair back to its bouncy best. Shea Butter delivers moisture to dry or damaged hair from root to tip, and helps repair and protect against environmental stressors, dryness and brittleness. We also recommend to avoid shampooing your hair daily, as shampoo strips hair of its natural oils. Only apply shampoo to your scalp and the roots of your hair.

Here's our favorite Deep Conditioning Treatment

Tip #2: Leave-in protein treatments

Leave-in protein treatments can help restore the natural bonds in your hair so that damage is less obvious. Conditioning sprays rich in keratin can also soothe broken bonds in the hair follicles. When used regularly, it allows your hair to regain its natural resistance, repairing damage of the fiber, and helping keep the hair hydrated. Try our favorite here

Let's talk about how to prevent future damage

The best solution for heat-damaged hair is to prevent it altogether. Of course, this isn’t always possible, but there are some proven strategies that can protect your hair.

Hair Styling Must #1:

Keep your styling tools way under 410 degrees.

We know that they work so well the hotter they are, but hotter isn't better. Instead of relying so much on heat for your styling, try incorporating more styling aids and products to help your styling become more efficient and effective.

Hair Styling Must #2:

Don’t Heat-Style Damp Hair.

When you apply hot tools like straighteners or curling irons to damp hair, you’re basically boiling the water inside of your hair. Wet or even damp hair is much more fragile than dry hair. And the tools’ heat transforms moisture into steam, which damages the hair strand as it escapes. Only use these hot tools on completely dry hair to avoid this kind of damage.

Hair Styling Must #3:

Use a Heat Protectant.

These heat-resistant styling products work by slowing heat conduction from the styling tool to your hair. However, heat protectants won’t completely defend your hair against damage, so it’s still wise to use hot tools sparingly. Try our favorite here

Unfortunately, heat-damaged hair can happen very quickly, while repairing that heat damage can take a long time. That’s why it’s so important to avoid heat damage in the first place! Treat your hair to a little extra TLC and it will reward you by maintaining its healthy look.

We cannot wait to see you soon!

The Secret Weapon For Fine Hair

have fine hair? our must-have tips.

Do you struggle with volume and holding a style? Having fine hair might seem like a blessing to some. It’s easy to style and often requires no blow-drying or heat styling. But it also can be challenging to hold a curl or add the appearance of volume. This can be a major bummer when you have a look in mind!

When you have fine hair, what you do while your hair is wet matters most. This is the most important thing to remember!

The most important step in getting volume for fine hair starts in the shower, so avoid any deeply hydrating products that could weigh your hair down at the root. Using products specifically formulated for fine, thin hair is the key.

Here are our must-have products for fine hair.

Choose the Right Shampoo

Choosing the right shampoo makes a huge difference on how your hair looks, feels and holds a style. One of our favorite cleansing products is Kevin Murphy's Plumping.Wash & Rinse. Created to nourish every strand from root to tip, fine and aging hair will transform into stronger, fuller-looking locks with renewed strength and vitality.

Another Great Option

Loma is a super affordable, salon quality hair care line that has great products for fine hair! At Opulent Beauty Salon, we love this line and use it often on our guests! Loma's daily shampoo and conditioner is designed for those with fine to normal hair.

The True Secret Weapon: Styling

Styling is the true secret to creating a lasting style for fine hair! Our biggest product recommendation is Body.Builder. This mousse will add fullness and hold to your hair, resulting in a flexible, full hold!

Another Secret Weapon

The other secret weapon we use at the salon is Hair.Resort Spray! This product is perfect for styling and won't weigh your hair down. It will add texture and hold, perfect for that beachy look!

ready to style fine hair like a pro?

Follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Wash and condition your hair and towel dry

Step 2: Detangle and brush hair

Step 3: Apply body.builder from roots to ends

Step 4: Spray hair resort evenly through hair. Do not over use!

Step 5: Blow dry hair using a brush

Step 6: Finish with your favorite hot tool!

We promise if you follow this step by step you will get amazing volume and hold! Found these tips helpful? Let us know by tagging us on Instagram!

Frizz Fighting Tips

Are you a frizzy friend?

If you’re hoping to learn how to get rid of frizzy hair for good, we’ll tell you how. Frizz is the number one struggle when it comes to hair woes. There are a few different causes of frizzy hair, but the two most common are dryness and breakage. Let's discuss the root cause of pesky frizz.

Exposure to stressors like harsh shampoos, hot styling tools, and chemical services can strip the protective layer of lipids that help seal in moisture and keep your strands smooth. This ends up making your hair porous. Porous hair absorbs moisture (like humidity in the air) and causes the hair to swell, ultimately resulting in unkempt, frizzy-looking strands. Not great!

You’re unlikely to find anything that eliminates frizz completely. With that said, maintaining a proper haircare routine can help smooth your strands, both in the short and long term.

Here is are our 5 tips to remove frizz from your life to make getting ready so much easier in your day to day!

Choose the Right Shampoo

Choosing the right shampoo is essential for frizz control. Look for a formula that cleans without stripping away the hair’s natural oils, like Repair-Me.Wash or Loma Moisturizing Shampoo. Once you’ve chosen your formula, it's time to get shampooing!

Another important tip, though it’s important to keep your hair and scalp clean, you may not need to shampoo every day. For some, it’s best not to. The natural oils produced by your scalp is great for your strands!

Purchase Loma Moisturizing Wash

Apply Conditioner From Roots To Ends

Choosing the right conditioner is key. We want to stay away from products that coat the hair, instead choose products that are the proper pH. Products that have a lower pH will actually seal down the cuticle. A smooth cuticle = smooth hair. We love Re.Store by Kevin Murphy or Loma Moisturizing Conditioner.

Do a Weekly Hair Mask

Add a deep conditioning mask to your weekly haircare routine for lasting frizz control. We recommend Loma Deep Conditioner. The nourishing formula deeply moisturizes and helps strengthen weak, brittle tresses. With regular use, it also helps protect hair against future damage.

Use Frizz Fighting Products

Think of products as liquid tools. It takes tools to get the job done. Since frizz is created from damage and/or from a distressed cuticle, choosing the right products is crucial. We always recommend a heat protectant. This will protect your hair from future damage. Our absolute favorite is Heated.Defense and Smooth.Again treatment. This product delivers all the benefits of a hard-working styling product, alongside the smoothing and nourishing benefits of a treatment. This leave-in smoothing treatment helps eliminate frizz, leaving you with smoother, silkier more touchable hair.

Use the Right Tools, Go Ionic

Ionic blow-dryers reduce frizz by compressing the cuticle, which locks out puff-inducing moisture. Ionic technology and a ceramic heating element further help to evenly distribute heat and moisture, reducing frizz and keeping hair soft and healthy. If you're a frequent blow dryer, we recommend investing in a new dryer.

Go out and fight that frizz!

What are your favorite frizz fighting tips? We would love to know! Post it on social media and be sure to tag us on Instagram!

Try Kevin Murphy's Young.Again oil to nourish your extensions. The results? Shiny, healthy hair!

Extra Moisture With Deep

Treatments

Keeping your hair super moisturized is important to have a long lasting extension wear. Utilizing a deep treatment at least once a week is a must. This will not only keep your hair healthy, it will make the wear of your extension hair long lasting.

Protect your Hair
